New “breakthrough” drug for Treatment Resistant Depression

When it comes to depression, it is safe to say that it is a universal disorder that affects people across all age groups and around the globe. In fact, the World Health Organisation says that each year more than 264 million people suffer from depression, of whom roughly 800,000 will die by committing suicide when they think nothing can help. In men and for young people aged 15-29 year-old, suicide is the second leading cause of death.

Not only are these numbers shocking, jarring and disheartening, but they are eye opening as well. Even with the range of depression treatments and drugs available these days, an astonishing number of individuals from all around the world are still forced to find ways to cope and live with their illness, when all their GP know how to do for them is prescribe fluoxetine.

A new weapon to combat TRD & MDD

For people who struggle with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), there may finally be a light at the end of the tunnel. Here at Green Door Clinic, we can prescribe a brand new medication registered for marketing authorisation in the UK and world-wide, as a nasal spray designed to give you access to the respite you deserve.

What is Esketamine?

Esketamine is a nasal spray anti-depressant developed to work by selectively targeting NMDA receptors in the brain. It works in conjunction with more conventional anti-depressant medication and talking therapy to provide relief from some of the most troublesome symptoms commonly associated with MDD and TRD.

Esketamine is simple and effective because it is used in conjunction with another anti-depressant drug together with talk therapy. This combination is scientifically proven by published clinical trials to reduce the severity of symptoms, thus allowing those with TRD and MDD new access to recovery.

How does Esketamine work?

Esketamine is a controlled medication available on prescription by a consultant psychiatrist, which is sprayed directly into the nasal cavity. Once in the nasal cavity, the drug works to access the blood stream to the brain and selectively target NMDA receptors as an antagonist. You carry on taking your usual prescribed anti-depressant to target another set of neurotransmitter receptors.

This powerful combination works to change the activity of natural neurotransmitters working within your brain, that are ultimately responsible for the intense, sticky and deep mood dives that those with TRD and MDD often experience as symptoms of their illness.

The video below showcases the road to recovery for a real patient of ours, using Esketamine, whose identity we have anonymised.

Are there side effects with Esketamine?

As with any pharmaceutical medication, there are always side effects that you should be aware of before taking Esketamine. We always recommend having a chat with your general practitioner doctor as well as your consultant psychiatrist doctor, prior to beginning a treatment plan that includes Esketamine.
